New Assistant Professor, Mallika Thomas

The Department is delighted to welcome Assistant Professor Mallika Thomas.  Thomas is a labor economist who did her graduate work at the University of Chicago, having received her undergraduate degree from Yale.  She will be teaching labor economics courses. Her research concerns human capital accumulation, with a particular interest in information and contracting problems in the labor market and in the household.  In one application of these ideas, she studies the impact of the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 on women’s promotion opportunities.  Her work explores the problem of information asymmetry between firms and workers, and she shows that in the presence of incomplete contracts, such polices can widen the gender gaps in promotions.
