Being an economist requires communicating with a diverse set of colleagues, students, and stakeholders. Seminars, job talks, presentations, and lectures provide an opportunity to connect with your audience and engage them with your work, but only if done successfully. Join us for a one-day symposium focused on improving your communication skills in seminars, job talks, and other formal venues. You can expect to hone your skills as a speaker while considering your role as an audience member.

This event is specifically designed for graduate students and developing faculty members in economics and related fields, but all are welcome to attend.

Schedule of Events

9:00 – 9:30 am: Breakfast & Welcoming Remarks
9:30 – 10:45 am: Panel: “Cross-cultural communication with practiced presenters”
11:00 am – 12:00 pm: Q&A Presentation: “Do I have to buy a sweater vest? Fitting in on the academic job market.”
12:00 – 1:30 pm: Lunchtime Keynote with Prof. Lisa Cook
1:30 – 2:45 pm: Panel: “Thank you for your question: gender and seminar culture”
3:00 – 4:00 pm: Interactive Session: “From good to great: strategies for mastering body language, pacing, and other performance elements”
4:00 – 4:30 pm: Closing reception: Cash Bar (first drink is free with registration)

Keynote Speaker: Lisa Cook

Lisa Cook is an Associate Professor of Economics at Michigan State University and co-director of the American Economic Association Summer Program. Prof. Cook served as a Senior Economist at the President’s Council of Economic Advisors under President Barack Obama.

Francine Blau is a Professor of Economics and Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University.
Ariel Ortiz-Bobea is an Assistant Professor of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University.
Chris Barrett is a Professor of Applied Economics and Management at Cornell University.
Laura Tach is an Associate Professor of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University.
Tatiana Homonoff is an Assistant Professor of Economics and Public Policy at NYU.
John Cawley is a Professor of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University.
Hsueh-Hsiang (Cher) Li is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Colorado State University.
