Mukul Majumdar Lectures at Indian Statistical Institute

During the month of November Professor Mukul Majumdar, H.T. Warshow and R.I. Warshow Professor of Economics Emeritus, gave two talks in India and traveled to Cambodia and Thailand.

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) invited Professor Majumdar to speak during the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the birth of Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, the founder of the ISI.  Mahalanobis initiated statistical science research in India and was a pioneer of large-scale sample surveys.  

Majumdar presented his talk “Sustainability and Uncertainty” and was presented with a commemorative plaque for his participation in the series of scientific events happening in honor of Mahalanobis.

During his trip to India, Prof. Majumdar also spoke in Mumbai at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR). On November 17th, he presented a seminar titled, “Turnpike Properties and Roy Radner.”

The Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research is an advanced research institute established and funded by the Reserve Bank of India for carrying out research on development issues from a multi-disciplinary point of view.

Mukul Majumdar is the H.T. Warshow and R.I. Warshow Professor of Economics Emeritus at Cornell University.  Majumdar taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses at the University from 1976 until his retirement in 2017.  He served as chairman of the Economics Department from 1981-1984. 

In 1964, Prof. Majumdar was awarded the President of India’s Gold Medal for his outstanding undergraduate studies and a government scholarship from 1960-1964.

He was also the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship and was elected a Fellow of the Econometric Society in 1976.  In 1989, Majumdar received the College de France Medal.

His current research interests include Sustainable Economic Development, Intertemporal Decentralization, Dynamical Systems: Chaos-Cycles, Allocation Theory, and International Trade Theory.
