1:30-4:30 PM
Johnson Art Museum 6th floor
The Department of Economics, in conjunction with Tapan’s family, will hold a Memorial Service for Goldwin Smith Professor of Economics Tapan Mitra on Saturday, September 21 from 1:30 – 4:30 PM on the Cornell campus. The memorial will be in the Johnson Art Museum on the 6th floor.
The agenda for the event is as follows, which aligns with the preferences Tapan left for his memorial service:
Part I - Memorial - 75 minutes
- Traditional memorial for colleagues, family and friends, with brief 3-5 minute statements from those who wish to speak.
Part II - Reception – 45 minutes
- Finger foods, and opportunity for people to connect and catch up.
Part III - Academic Tribute - 60 minutes
- 3 to 4 short presentations from students, colleagues, and co-authors.
Please feel free to come to part or all of the event. If you are planning on coming, we ask that you RSVP to Amy Moesch (alg5@cornell.edu). When you RSVP, please let Amy know if you would like to speak in Part I. We will do our best to honor all speaking requests. Tapan was explicit in his will that he did not want long speeches or an overly long memorial, so we are limiting the number of speakers and the time allotted to conform with his wishes. We hope that even if you are unable to speak that you can join us.
We reserved a block of rooms (Mitra Memorial) at the Hilton Garden Inn (607-277-8900); please book your room by Sept. 4 to access the lower block price. If you have any problems with the room reservation, please email Amy Moesch (alg5@cornell.edu).
Tapan was a very important member of the Cornell Economics Department and of the Economics profession, and his loss has been felt deeply by all of us. We look forward to seeing you in Ithaca to celebrate the impressive life and intellectual accomplishments of Tapan Mitra.
Mitra passed away in Ithaca on February 3, 2019. Learn more about his life and contributions to the field of economics here.
