Eight graduate students were awarded 2022 Hsien and Daisy Yen Wu Scholarships. These awards provide recipients with funds to help with any aspect of doctoral study, from research expenses to living expenses.
This year’s recipients are: Shiping Cao, mathematics; Yue Deng, materials science and engineering; Shan-Chi Hsieh, microbiology; Zihan Hu, economics; Hui Ji, genetics, genomics, and development; Yubo Su, astronomy and space sciences; Yongjian Tang, physics; and Hui Zhou, applied economics and management.
The Wu Scholarship was established by Daisy Yen Wu in memory of Hsien Wu, parents of the late Cornell professor Ray Wu, to recognize graduate students for their academic ability, performance, character, and financial need. Students become eligible to receive the award after completing a minimum of three semesters of study in a doctoral program with preference given to students beyond their second year.
“I am grateful for being recognized,” said Ji. “This award will greatly encourage me as I advance my career as a researcher to the next level.”
For Ji and Tang, scholarship funds will support attendance at additional conferences, introducing them to potential new research topics and encouraging collaborations with individuals across academia and industry. Su and Deng look forward to upgrading personal devices to best support their research.
“My current laptop is so outdated now that it can barely handle my daily computational needs,” said Deng. “This financial support provided by the Hsien and Daisy Yen Wu Scholarship allows me to upgrade to a more advanced model, which will greatly improve my work quality and efficiency.”
The Wu Scholarship is one of several that the Graduate School administers each year for continuing students. Other awards include Provost Diversity Fellowships for Advanced Doctoral Students and the Africa Fund.
“This year’s Wu Scholars demonstrate outstanding academic excellence and commitment to their scholarly pursuits,” said Kathryn J. Boor, dean of the Graduate School and vice provost for graduate education. “The Wu Scholarship is one of many ways we recognize excellence among our graduate students.”
